 How is it different from Meditation?

The definitions of mindfulness have developed in modern psychology. In 1979 Jon Kabat-Zinn founded Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School based this training on his Buddhist Zen teachings.

As survivors we often hear about Mindfulness training.  How is it different from Meditation?

The definitions of mindfulness have developed in modern psychology. In 1979 Jon Kabat-Zinn founded Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School based this training on his Buddhist Zen teachings.

Mediation is a part of many religious practices, made popular in the west with Buddhism.

Both Mindfulness and Mediation contain the same skill sets of awareness, open attention to feelings and sensations, without judgement. I find the terms are interchangeable. The methods are very similar and the results the same. I have practiced meditation since 2004. It allows me to calm myself, slow down and examine what is important, and helps heal my psyche. It is a touchstone of sorts. People that have known me before and after my cancer relay that they see the difference in my state of mind. Now, that does not mean that I am always calm or without fear or pain. It means that for some moments of my day I can leave my anxiety and fears to find a place where I am same.

Just one example of the same result using different names can be found in the journal  Psycho-Oncology May 9 2013 issue.

“This randomized controlled trial revealed that Tibetan Sound Meditation program appears to be a feasible and acceptable intervention and may be associated with short-term improvements in objective and subjective cognitive function as well as mental health and spirituality in breast cancer patients. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.”

This same medical journal found in February 2009 issue that

“We conclude that the MBSR(BC) Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program significantly improves psychological distress, fear of recurrence, and quality of life among BC survivors who have recently transitioned off treatment.”

As Shakespeare  wrote ” What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

In my future blog I will give a short lesson on how to meditate. I will also list some you tube sites that you may find helpful.

  1. I am just getting started with mindfulness thanks for the information. Here in Newtown I have joined a group for an eight week session of Mindfulness based stress reduction. I am excited to get started
